infoInformation about our types of activities

Below are general descriptions of our various events held throughout the year - as you mouse over the title, the description will appear. EACH event has its own sign-up sheet; we make no assumptions that you will attend multiple/related events on a given day if you ONLY RSVP for one event.

  • dinner Dinner

    dinner Dinner

We offer potlucks and catered dinners throughout the year. The venue may limit attendance, so the club may close sign ups before the cut-off date.

We plan 2 dinners per year: one is our Holiday Party (Dec) and the other is our Awards Dinner (Mar). Dinners are catered events at "The Lodge". You pre-pay for your dinner selection via snail mail and there will be a list of attendees on-line. However, any changes to your RSVP must be made over the phone (contact name will be given).

A potluck is where the club requests attendees to bring a dish to share. For a potluck, we provide an RSVP form and the sign-up list. You may modify/cancel your RSVP by resubmitting a revised form - this new submission will replace any prior ones!

  • skiing Skiing

    skiing Skiing

Throughout the ski season we host ski days at nearby ski areas midweek. We negotiate lift ticket prices for the club on those days and possibly a bus (between Northwoods parking lot and the ski area). Payment for lift tickets are due that morning, either at the bus or meeting place of the ski area. We rely upon the signup sheets to determine the number of tickets, bus capacity, and overall number of skiers. We also need phone information as a means to contact the skier in case of any changes (cancelled bus and/or ski day).

  • exercise skiing Clinics

    Clinics

exercise We arrange for pre-season conditioning exercise classes at Trout Creek for our members. There is a fee for attendance if you do not have a Trout Creek fitness pass.

skiing We provide several ski clinics each at Tahoe Donner Ski Hill. In January we hold a three-day clinic in the morning at various skill levels. In February and March we offer a clinic or race choice for the morning. Such clinics are provided free to club members (there is a fee for guests), apart from the lift ticket. In combination with the Ski Hill we may offer a race clinic, for a fee, the day before the race.

  • golfing Golf

    golfing Golf

Each year we offer a golf tournament and the club provides an appetizer event afterwards for all members in the Grotto. You separately sign up for the tournament and appetizer (you can attend either or both). The club provides the appetizers and beverages may be purchased at the bar.

  • tennis Tennis

    tennis Tennis

Each year we hold a tennis round-robin with a potluck dinner to follow at the TD Tennis Center. You separately sign up for the tennis and potluck (you can attend either or both, but different volunteers check for numbers from the specific list they oversee).

  • kayaking Kayaking

    kayaking Kayaking

We typically arrange for 3 kayak trips in the summer at Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe. Our shortest trip is on Donner Lake and we socialize after with a Breakfast burrito. The sign-up sheets specify rental vs own kayaks and, based on that information, we work with a nearby vendor to set aside kayaks for our needs. The Lake Tahoe outings are generally longer where you'll want to bring plenty of water and food since we may not end until noon.

  • house tour Tour

    house tour Tour

In the fall we may offer a tour of Thunderbird Lodge. Payment will be made at the venue and we recommend carpooling from Northwoods since parking is at a premium. Signing up via the online form is a must since the number of attendees is limited.

Back Country Nordic Ski Day (RSVP)
Monday, February 22, 2016
8:00am at Northwoods parking lot
(It is highly recommended that we all meet at Northwoods Clubhouse since parking at some of the potential destinations (like Donner Summit) can be iffy and it might be cold if people have to wait at the trailhead.)

The maximum number of participants will be 8 so sign up early.

This is your opportunity to try backcountry skiing – the fastest growing winter sport in Tahoe. We will select the destination (probably Castle Peak or Sunshine Bowl) based on the latest snow, weather and avalanche conditions and then drive (car pool) to the trailhead. We will check to make sure you have all the appropriate equipment (see prerequisites below) at Northwoods. At the trailhead there will be a briefing about backcountry skiing and safety procedures (probably about 30 minutes). After some practice we will head out and ski (skin) up to the top of our ski destination. After catching our breath, taking in the beautiful view and consuming some sustenance we will ski down through pristine, untracked, (hopefully) snow. We can repeat this process (heading up in different directions) until lunch (or earlier if we get too tired). After we ski back to the trailhead we can head for some refreshments (ice cream? cupcakes? beer?, ???).

    Prerequisites:
  • You will need to rent (or borrow) back country equipment if you don't already have it. That includes an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe as well as AT (randonnée) skis and boots along with skins.
  • All of the above items can be rented at the Backcountry store on Donner Pass Road in Truckee (http://www.thebackcountry.net/). You will also need your ski poles and a pack to carry the Skins/Shovel/Probe as well as water and a snack. Bringing the above equipment is not optional.
    Warnings:
  • Climbing up mountains with skis and skins can be strenuous so you should be in reasonable shape. We will try to set a moderate pace.
  • We will be skiing on untracked and ungroomed snow so you need to be comfortable with off-piste skiing. There will be natural hazards like creeks, bushes and rocks with no signs or bamboo marking them and no ski patrol.
  • We may be skiing through trees (hopefully not too dense)
  • The snow can be variable (hard pack, powder, mashed potatoes, breakable crust, spring, … so you need to be competent in these conditions
  • Although we will select terrain that is reasonably safe, avalanche danger is always something to be aware of. We will be using best practices for travelling in avalanche terrain even if the avalanche danger is low.
    Background Info:
  • Read the local avalanche forecast (http://sierraavalanchecenter.org)
  • Background reading on avalanche safety (http://www.avalanche.org/tutorial/tutorial.html)
  • Background reading on AT gear and backcountry skiing (http://www.evo.com/how-to-get-started-backcountry-skiing-snowboarding.aspx)
  • Pointer to Avalanche Level I courses (http://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/education)

To cancel after 5pm, Feb 19 or if you have any questions, contact Bob Moore.

Carving Clinic and Chris Nelson Memorial Carving Cup (RSVP)
Wed/Thurs, February 10 and 11, 2016
8:30am (sign-in) at TD Downhill Ski Lodge

    Wednesday:
  • Ski Clinics will focus on making great carved turns.
  • Sign in 8:30 am - 9:15 am.
  • Clinic runs form 9:30am - noon
    Thursday:
  • Chris Nelson Memorial Carving Cup Race is appropriate for all TDSASC skiers. Come and show off your carving expertise!
  • Sign in 8:20 am - 8:50 am.
  • Warm up 9:00 am - 10:00 am.
  • Carving Cup Race starts at 10:15.

What is a Carving Cup Race? The course is set with 3 brushes paced in a horizontal line at each turn site. The skier selects the brush to turn around (near fall line, midway or wide). A skier's carving skill is awarded points for each turn (fewer for near the fall line, most for turning around the widest position); his/her total course skill score is then divided by time on the course for an overall score. Plan your strategy! -- More difficult turns with slower speed can win over a faster skier who races down the turns near the fall line. The course is set for ALL intermediate skiers. It is fun!! Plan to give it a try if you haven't before. Trophies are awarded to the top 3 men and women, so wax up those skis and plan on having fun. HELMETS REQUIRED.

NOTE: Two to four on-course volunteers are needed to help tally turn choices by racers on Friday. If you are not planning to race this would be a great way to still be involved. If you are planning to race, we'll figure out a tradeoff method so you can also ski. If you can help, sign up on the RSVP form or contact John McGregor at 530-550-0212.

Wear your arm band: Senior lift tickets $14.00 (70+ free) at the ticket counter. Clinic and race cost covered by your membership. Clinic charge to guests, $25 per day paid to TDSASC.

To cancel after 5pm, Feb 9 or if you have any questions, contact John McGregor.
